Two primary challenges when adding on to old homesteads are scale and massing.  With this project the program required adding 1000 s.f. to a home which was only 1500 s.f.  Such an addition could have easily overwhelmed the original home.  We hid the addition towards the rear of the property, and maintained the scale and massing of the existing home in the addition, repeating essential elements at a reduced size.  The old home has low ceilings, and therefore, low eave lines, so we were careful not to exceed them, opting instead for vaulted second floor spaces.  The client requested an outdoor balcony off their new bedroom where they could have breakfast while overlooking their gardens.
